At an initial stage, applicants will be issued with a provisional maritime service registration valid for 6 months. This provisional registration, which may be extended by a further period of 6 months, has the same effect of a permanent registration. However, permanent maritime registration shall only be granted once the Authorities are satisfied that the vessel is in conformity with all relevant international conventions.
As a general rule, vessels older than 25 years are not eligible for ship registration. Ships of 15 years and over but under 20 years must pass an inspection by an authorised flag state inspector before or within a month of provisional registration. On the other hand, ships of 20 years and over up to a maximum of 24 years, must pass an inspection by an authorised flag state inspector prior to provisional maritime service registration.
